Pavlich, who joined NT Cricket in 2024 after two decades in Adelaide, understands the weight of this occasion. He says, 'It's not just another match; there's a lot riding on it, a lot more scrutiny.' This is his first Test pitch, and he's been working tirelessly to get it right.
The pitch, made from Legend Couch grass, has been a focus since his arrival. Pavlich explains, 'We've been working on it since 2024 to ensure it's perfect.' He's learned from past experiences, including the drop-in pitch for the Australia A-Sri Lanka A series last year, where the surface flattened quickly.
This time, he aims for more movement and life in the pitch, especially with the fast bowlers expected from both teams. 'We want a little more movement later in the game,' he says, acknowledging the importance of grass density.
However, Pavlich faces challenges unique to Darwin's climate. The temperature drop in August can halt grass growth, and heavy dew and moisture in the mornings can be a concern. Pests and mites also impact the pitch's health. Despite these obstacles, he remains confident in his team's abilities.
Les Burdett, a legendary Australian curator, has offered support and guidance, reinforcing the trust between curators and Cricket Australia. Pavlich values this relationship, saying, 'We're left to our own devices, and that trust is crucial.'
